The Woodford Reserve Distillery is a national historic landmark that has been distilling bourbon dating back as far as 1812 in beautiful Woodford County, Kentucky. The distillery has changed hands and ownership over the years, and most recently restarted production and refurbishing in 1993 and the Woodford brand was introduced in 1996. According to Woodford Reserve themselves this bourbon boasts over 200 detectable flavor notes. It is a readily available, affordable premium bourbon that in our opinions at the bourbon lodge is a must have for any bourbon shelf and a great building block for your bourbon collection.

My neighbor, Bourbon Ben participated in this tasting with me. Our notes are listed below.

Justin's Notes

Nose: Right off the bat I noticed floral notes. I also notice a good amount of apple, some smoke, and some vanilla.

Color: Light caramel.

Taste: I always get an overwhelming sweetness with this bourbon. Tastes of vanilla, with a hint of red apple and honey.

Finish: A long smooth finish. Hints of a pepper bite as the finish starts.

Notes: With Woodford Reserve the smoothness always stands out. It’s extremely well chosen and well mixed by master distiller Chris Morris.

Notes: Very good bourbon neat for moderately experienced bourbon drinkers. Serve over ice or with a splash of water for beginners. pairs well in cocktails. Great bourbon.

  • This bourbon is extremely consistent and easy drinking.
  • It comes in at a great price. Again consistently under $40 at $38.15 and frequently cheaper when on sale.
  • Readily available. I’ve never walked in and been unable to find this bourbon at any of my stores. It is such a good bourbon for as available as it is.

This is one of the first bourbons I drank seriously for enjoyment. This bourbon has nostalgic qualities for me. Extremely good bourbon at the price to build your collection around.
